As I was driving to work this morning, a middle-aged woman in a volvo pulled up right next to me, tooted her horn, and waved enthusiastically. Then she passed me. Turns out, she had University of Richmond license plates, too.
That little exchange made my mush plates worth the cost and all of the DMV hassle.
You just know that she's going to tell her co-workers, husband, kids, and pastor about those kick-ass, stick-it-to-Cooper tags she saw this morning.

Glad you got your UR cred.
U R MUSH!!
what is this? a hallmark card?
dude, if a soccer mom giving you props is all it takes to make you feel that a trip to Hell (er, the DMV) was worthwhile, then I feel like we need to have an intervention. Pronto.
Personally, I don't even know what the big deal was with Mr. Cooper's comment. Sheeit, I thought it was pretty gangsta of him to diss the alumni like that. But you know, UR is trying to come up and all. It was like the Beatles moving away from all of the weak Love Me Do bullisht and saying, "aye mates, let's take some droogs and come up with some really trippy shite."
Ah ha, thse, therein lies the rub!
You said UR's been trying to "come up" and all, but UR ALREADY WAS UP! The ongoing conflict with alumni stems from the fact that they (i.e. we) felt like Mr. Cooper was bringing UR down. We want the University of Richmond to be the University of Richmond, not the Snooty-Elitist-Northeastern-Liberal-Arts-College-that-happens-to-be-located-in-Richmond.
And frankly, when you ascend to the level of University President, there are certain things you just can't say publicly, and calling your alumni "mush" is one of them...especially when you don't have much gangsta cred with the alumni to begin with.
C'mon now, how "up" were we? Seriously, I'd like to know. Were we like, oh say, the second coming of Duke University? Did Cooper wreck things that much? Is UR a community college now? Are we a satellite campus of J. Sarge?
If my degree should be getting more shine than it has for the last several years, then I need to know about it yesterday.
Hey! I used to teach at a community college. We looked up to the Sarge. Us John Tyler boys got no respect.
To be fair, UR's never been that far up, and it hasn't gone that far down (unless you count "a direction a lot of alumni don't like" as "down"). But the point is, given all that, is it really wise to sell an unpopular agenda to alumni by insulting them, while simultaneously not making the University appreciably better to prove them wrong? For now, I'll take Soccer Mom's opinion.
P.S.--spydrz, don't be bringin' up J Sarge and JT to a proud University of Northern Virginia Community College alum!
P.P.S.--I made up the "University of" part.
I'd write more, but I want to go out and play in the snow!
THSE - Unfortunately, all it takes to make my day is a woman - any woman - to show the slightest bit of interest in me or my toys.
As for UR, sad as it is, if anything's going to boost our degrees' value, it'll be successful football and/or basketball seasons. And Mr. Cooper is not well-liked in the athletic department.
dubin - Exactly. And you can't jack the price up and magically expect the quality to follow.
You got snow?! Lucky duck.
