Congratulations to the White Sox. I'd much prefer the Orioles or Nationals to have won the World Series, but at least it wasn't the Yankees (that's what I'll be thankful for this Thanksgiving). Now I can finally go to bed.
it was a great season for us chicagoans that are sports fans. and i've blogged almost obsessively (if not efficiently or well) but it was also great because we had no riots. just a bunch of peaceful and happy drunks.
when/if the cubs win, we can make no such promises.
Would it have been too much to ask for the Astros to win just ONE game? Not that I'm an Astros fan, and not that I'm not primarily glad the Yankees didn't win, but come on...
In all honesty, I was hoping the Astros would pull one out and hit a homer in the 9th. Just to make it more interesting. Of course, we know the real reason why Houston lost.
OK, so I read the little article about "why Houston lost." And I've prepared a cogent, erudite response:
Whaaaaaaaat?
Maybe it's because Americans-of-African-descent don't WANT to play baseball, or at least 91% of them. So MLB franchises should go out and sign black players who aren't any good just so they can fulfill some roster quota? If the Astros had gone out and gotten some talentless scrubs just to add some color to their roster, how could that have helped them? They couldn't even generate any offense with the pros they had.
the mvp of the world series is african american. if that makes any difference.
and i love that we share the same last name.
but the real issue is that baseball doesn't hold the interest level for urbanites that basketball and football do (basketball's very rhythms and blood scream 'urban.' football is about hard-hitting and violence - that's just as all-across the board American as you can get.)
baseball is a pastoral sport. it's about passing the time and looking for, say in wrigley, leaves dangling from the walls, grass, positioning of rather static players. baseball's meant to be indulged as spectators. it doesn't draw immediate attention. it's losing popularity across the board in the us. but, compared to the other two major sports, it's almost down for the count with the urban (non-Carribean) crowd.
with the loss of popularity is a loss of competition.
anyway, i'm done with this hastily-written treatise.
You're both right. Quotas aren't going to raise the play level of baseball. And black kids simply would rather play basketball and football. They are more excitng sports. Like hockey, it's also an access thing: it takes a lot of space to play baseball. BB courts are everywhere and FB can be played in the street.
With that said, the sport of the future is jai alai.

yeah, micah. i think we're gonna see more blacks playing golf and hockey in the near future than baseball.
